Intro to Typography:  Class 2

This course provides an overview of the basic fundamentals of type design as it applies to graphics, advertising, and other areas of visual communication. It focuses on how typography can be used as a communicative device as well as a graphic, compositional, and expressive element.

  • What is typography?
  • What is the difference between serif and sans serif?
  • What is the difference between kerning and leading?
  • What is the difference between cap line and x-height?
  • What is the difference between ascenders and descenders?
  • How many points in an inch?
  • What is a reverse?

3.  In-class exercises
  • Choosing the Perfect Typeface With Imagery
    • ​Create a logo/wordmark of your own for your chosen company
    • Follow the steps in your handout to choose proper fonts to match your graphics
    • Design your logo in Mircrosoft Office with your chosen font(s)
    • Answer all questions in the handout ​
