Intro to Photoshop:  Class 2

1.  Review
  • Selection Techniques:  marquee (2 kinds), lasso (3 kinds), magic wand/quick selection
  • Undo (your best friend!!!)
  • Brushes (hardness/softness/size)
  • Finder (happy blue man at the bottom of the dock on the left)

2.  In-class exercise
  • Tulip.jpg Quick Selection excercise (hue/saturation, transform, etc)
  • Elephant.jpg Layer Puzzle exercise (rename and organize each layer, move, transform, and rotate to build finished elephant)
  • Rhino.jpg Layer Puzzle exercise (rename and organize each layer, move, transform, and rotate to build finished rhino)

3.  Key terms/concepts
  • Layers - a layer is simply one image stacked on top of another (think of "layer cake")
  • Benefits of working in layers -They do not destroy your original photo; You are working on top of or on copies of that photo; You will have more control; You can use blending modes to change the way layers interact; You can change the opacity of any effects
  • Healing Brush Tool - allows you to fix image imperfections such as scratches, blemishes, etc. by sampling the surrounding area
  • Patch Tool - allows you to fix larger areas of imperfections in an image
4.  Shortcuts
  • Command + x = cut (think scissors)
  • Command + l = levels
  • i = switch to the Eye Dropper Tool
