Intro to Photoshop:  Class 1

3.  Key terms/concepts
  • Dock - the bar of icons that sits at the bottom or side of your screen on a Mac computer
  • Tool Bar - double column of tool buttons located on the left side of your screen
  • Palette - located on the right side of your screen
  • Menu - options located at the top of your screen
  • Work space - also referred to as your "canvas", located in the middle of your screen
  • Move Tool - moves items around in the work space
  • Zoom Tool - allows you to zoom in and out on your work space
  • Scrubby Zoom - allows you to zoom in and out of your image by dragging your mouse to the left and right of your work space
  • Filters - allows you to apply special visual effect to your images
  • Selection Tools - rectangle marquee, elliptical marquee, lasso, polygonal lasso, magnetic lasso, quick selection, and magic wand
  • RGB - color profile, containing red, green, and blue
  • CMYK - color profile, containing cyan, magenta, yellow, and key (black)
  • DPI - dots per inch
  • 300 DPI - great quality for print
  • 140 DPI - great quality for newspapers
  • 72 dpi - great quality for web
  • History palette - allows you to move backwards in "time"
  • Content aware - lets Photoshop examine the actual contents of your image as it tries to figure out the best way to remove or repair the damaged or unwanted area you’ve selected (eagle example)
4.  Shortcuts
  • Command + a = Select all
  • Command + c = copy
  • Command + v = paste
  • Command + z = undo
  • Command + 0 = zoom out to full screen
  • Command + w = closes a tab or folder
  • Command + q = quits a program
  • Command + t = transforms an object so that you can rotate, enlarge, or shrink it
  • Command + tab = launches the application switcher (you can toggle between different programs)
  • b = switch to the Brush Tool
  • g = switch to the Gradient/Paint Bucket Tool
  • Holding down the shift key  = allows you to make a perfect square or circle shape (forces proportionality)
  • Holding down the space bar = turns your mouse in to a hand that you can use to navigate around in your work space
