Intermediate/Advanced Photoshop:  Class 4

1.  Video
  • This video shows you a behind-the-scenes look at photo-manipulation and airbrushing:
Body Evolution - Before and After
  • This video shows you everyday women Photoshopped in to super models:
Photoshopping Real Women into Cover Models
2.  In-Class Exercise:
  • Advanced Airbrushing - woman1.jpg or woman2.jpg
  • Advanced Airbrushing - your own
3.  Key terms/concepts
  • Airbrushing - a painting method in Photoshop that simulates traditional airbrush techniques.
  • Clone Stamp Tool - the oldest and most widely known of the cloning tools. The basic concept is that you duplicate certain portions of an image using a source, destination and brush.
  • Patch Tool - is used to remove unwanted image elements. The Content-Aware option in the Patch tool synthesizes nearby content for seamless blending with the surrounding content.
  • Curves - you adjust points throughout an image’s tonal range. Initially, the image’s tonality is represented as a straight diagonal line on a graph. When adjusting an RGB image, the upper-right area of the graph represents the highlights and the lower-left area represents the shadows. The horizontal axis of the graph represents the input levels (original image values) and the vertical axis represents the output levels (new adjusted values). As you add control points to the line and move them, the shape of the curve changes, reflecting your image adjustments. The steeper sections of the curve represent areas of higher contrast while flatter sections represent areas of lower contrast.
4.  In-Class Exercise:  Graphic Composition
  • Objectives - This assignment enables you to use Photoshop to create an ABSTRACT graphic composite. You will use multiple selection techniques that we have covered in the class, especially the alpha channel as a masking technique.
  • Step 1 - First, try to decide what idea you will communicate with your composite. Start to think of elements or source images you might want to use, and come up with a theme for your composite.
  • Step 2 - Create a new, blank file to which you will add your images.  Name the file as “yourlastname_project.psd.”   The color mode should be RGB.  The image size should be 800 pixels wide and 600 pixels high.  Resolution should be 300.
  • Step 3 - Third, in your file use a combination of elements from multiple sources, that work with your theme.  In composing your graphic, make sure to use relevant skills to:
    • Seamlessly combines images (blend if necessary, and remove artifacts)
    • Properly use and name layers
    • Make clean selections (make sure to use alpha channel selection if necessary)
    • Transform an image properly (command + t, and resize while holding down Shift)
    • Use brushes creatively if necessary
