Advanced Typography:  Class 2

This course is a continuation of Typography with a concentration on hand lettering and typeface creation using pencil, paper, pen, and the computer.  Emphasis is on applying the rules of typography, exploring visual hierarchy, and using graphic software effectively,  Making your own typeface is a great way to show off your design and illustration skills and of course a milestone for any designer!

1.  Course schedule and locations

2.  Get inked!
  • Using your black rollerball ink pen, ink your letters and cleanly as possible
  • Use a ruler if necessary
  • Once the ink dries, erase any miscellaneous pencil marks
3.  Scanning
  • Once you finish the entire alphabet, make sure your papers clearly has your font name on it
  • Your font will be scanned so that we can continue work on it
4.  Clean up your lines using Photoshop

  • Bring your scanned letters in to Photoshop
  • ​Convert your scanned letters to black and white
  • Remove any graph paper lines and unwanted marks - make your canvas as clean as possible
5.  Vectorize using Illustrator

  • After you cleaned up your typeface, vectorize your work in Illustrator using Image Trace to get your glyphs to be individual vectors

6.  Make your lines nice and smooth!
  • Here’s your chance to also clean up your work and smooth some bumpy lines.  (Super easy if you have a tablet to work with!)
  • Smooth the bumpier lines but make sure to keep the original hand drawn qualities if that’s the look you’re going for

7.  Save your work!
  • Save your work as yourlastname.svg.  SVG stands for Scalable Vector Graphics, a new vector format currently in development for Web graphics and animation.
  • Back your work up - either to Google Drive, Hightail, USB drive, external harddrive, etc.
